Merlin Space Patches
Oct. 9th, 2011 01:26 pmThis idea started waaay back last year, sometime in May 2010, maybe a little earlier.
There was a prompt on KMM asking for a Mars voyaging Merlin and Arthur and I left an anon comment about how much I loved space exploration and rambled some facts or whatnot. Well someone commented on my comment unanon so I contacted them because it was awesome to talk space and Merlin.
Anyway, ideas started happening and I began working on mission patches to accompany (several) potential space fic/s.
Sadly, the computer where the photoshop files lived currently has a very fickle harddrive and I can't get on it. Though, I'm hoping my aunt has a backup. (Sigh, another reason why I stick to traditional art because I'm not trustworthy with technology).
However, I managed to salvage many jpgs of the patches from my conversations with potential author!
I also made some thumbnails for this, so I'll start with those.
I was inspired by the mission patches made for NASA, starting from the 1960's with the Gemini missions through to the Shuttle missions (though I was most inspired by the Apollo mission patches, they are by far my favorite because they get very whimsical).

You can see the list of crew members on the side!

It was at this point I realized I needed to make these on the computer.

Playing around with the Pendragon crest and the constellation Draco.
This was when I created the Pendragon stock.
Fun fact: The constellation has as many stars in it as the proposed amount of crew members for the Camelot.
Camelot Mission Patch!
3 versions. The second was the decided 'best' one.

Avalon Mission Patch!
The Avalon would be following the Camelot as the second ship to Mars.
I chose the constellation Cetus, the sea monster/whale, had the right number of stars and also ties in with Avalon being a waterway.
Once again, the second one with the solid sword on top of Mars was chosen as the 'best.'

There was also speak of a prequel where Merlin and Arthur met many years before at space camp.
Apparently there too you make a group patch together!
The blues outlined ones are my favorite!
These patches are very Merlin and Arthur orientated. :)

I was informed that at space camp if names were to go on the patch you would need to include everyone, and that could be A LOT of people. So I took the names off the patch, but kept the quote! Also, it didn't much matter since there's the Merlin inside the dragon. XD
