People, I have been watching too much CATS.  Ugh, I can tell you about the variations in the song Mungojerry and Rumpleteazer between the OLC, OBC, and the film version.  Also, if anyone was not aware Andrew Lloyd Webber is extremely fickle and changes his mind all the time.

No, I never realized that at all. Especially with the Ballad of Billy McCaw.

Or to move away from CATS, the various canon versions of Think Of Me in existance....

I wish I had access to the OLC CATS.... *o*

...also, I should not want to burst out into Of The Aweful Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles Together With Some Account of the Participation of the Pugs and the Poms and the Intervention of the Great Rumpus Cat right now....
(Though I do wish it were on more recordings... and not cut as often from the stageshow....)

PS: WAS there a "new number written for the movie" at all? I keep on trying to compare with different versions and the above song seems to be the only thing I can come up with that's not in most RECORDINGS, but I have photographic evidence (http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/Cats-Book-Musical-T-S-Eliot/9780156155823-item.html) that the song is nothing new.
...and why did they leave out Growltiger's Last Stand? It's a lovely number.... (Timothy Scott singing in that song makes me very happy......)

*stops fangirling*

I found the OLC on grooveshark.com and youtube, be warned it takes some dedication to dig them out of hiding.

I'm pretty sure that nothing new was added to the film version. They did however get a complete orchestra for the recording and they cut the dance instrumentals on a bunch of songs (but I'm pretty sure the instrumentals were cut on the stage recordings as well, so nothing really too different).

I believe they cut out Growltiger's Last Stand for two reasons. In the film the actor they hired to play Gus, John Mills I believe was his name, was too old to do the actual Growltiger part (but I argue that they could have just gotten another actor for the actual song). Also, I think they gave themselves a maximum limit on the length of the film, which is why other dance numbers are shortened along with the cutting of Growltiger's Last Stand.

It's a shame they cut it because the only memory I have from seeing the musical on B'way is a pirate ship against the Jellicle moon, so when the film came out I thought I was insane and imagined that memory (I was really young when I saw CATS live). Until I researched it, I had no idea that the pirate ship came from the Growltiger scene.

Oooh. I will have to do some good digging then.

They did cut a lot of dance stuff. No conjuring turns.... ToT

Yes, John Mills couldn't have done it. Though, often Gus = Bustopher Jones, IIRC, and that guy couldn't do it either.

I saw it live years after seeing the movie. Front row--Bombalerina rubbed against me. <3
