I'm just curious, why wouldn't you want to go? I didn't go 'cause I thought it was stupid, but I ended up not getting to say 'goodbye' to a lot of my friends. They were all going to commencement while I was packing up my room and heading home. lol
Unfortunately, I'm in that in-between group where everyone I knew has either graduated last spring or are going to be graduating this spring. Also, I'm looking at the cost of actually participating in commencement.
Yeah, that was a huge thing for me... the amount of money to get a cap and gown was stupid. Also, I'd seen the ceremony twice before (since Harpur Chorale always performs at the Winter commencement). But yeah.. if your friends aren't going to be at the Winter one, it doesn't seem like there's much point to going unless your family wants to be there for you. (I ended up telling my family that I thought it was stupid for them to waste the money/effort to travel up there when it wasn't even that big of a deal to me.)
Family would actually be the only reason for me to go. I just recently reconnected with my grandmother this past year, and from the brief conversations I've had I think she would love nothing more than to attend my college graduation. But then I think about travel time, hotel arrangements, and not to mention the cost of a polyester gown and tassel. Eh, we'll see. I keep flipping back and forth. But I should make a decision soon.
I guess I'd just have a really serious conversation with them, asking them if they'd like to go... may be ask your mom about it. Tell her you really think using the money is a bad idea, and most of your friends didn't/aren't graduating that semester, so it doesn't really matter to you, but you're concerned how your extended family (especially your grandmother) would feel...
Also -- DO NOT RESERVE A HOTEL ROOM UNTIL YOU ARE SURE. (That said, you need to reserve one AS SOON AS you make your decision. People reserve them a year in advance, sometimes.) The reason I say this is because if you want to cancel, they might be real douchebags about it. My mom had to start a fight with the hotel company when I decided I wasn't going to go to graduation MONTHS before it actually was and they told her they weren't going to honor her refund. The funniest part? They actually re-booked the room (so they lost no money) and still tried to charge her.
Can you borrow a cap and gown from someone in the year above you or something? I know a bunch of people who did that.
I didn't attend my college graduation, since mine was going to be lumped in with the graduate division and I didn't know anyone. I didn't really see it as a big loss.
In order to get your degree at my school, you have to notify the university that you have enough/all the required credits completed. For our, and their convenience, we fill out an online application so they know who needs a diploma. I think they may also check that you completed everything. I'm predicting some hiccups in my future. One of my excess art classes need to be applied as an 'intro art' credit but the university doesn't believe anything that isn't in the computer. Ah, paperwork.
Ahh, I see! Sounds hectic! I hope for your sake it goes as smooth as it can. Is your university far from your parents/friends/relatives? Graduation and all. Wow man. :/
