I love when the internet uses it's powers for good.

Man, I'd never seen that before but ugh! What a botch job that had been! It was an amazing rescue job by the latest tattoo artist!

I've seen that tattoo all over the internet, when I saw this I was really happy for the guy who wears it!

I'm glad there was a happy ending to this story. Goodness, that first portrait tattoo looks bad. oO The improved one is really nicely done. :) What a relief for that guy I'd imagine.

Yeah, that first shot of the tattoo has been floating around the internet for years. I was really happy to see the new tat.

Well, now that tattoo artist gets to add the story to his portfolio! And I agree, it was a really nice final tat.

I'm really glad this guy got his tattoo fixed and that the artist did it for free. The new version looks pretty damn good, especially if you consider that it is a cover-up of a really crappy one.

Although, this really shows you that you NEED to research your artist before entrusting them with permanent body art. Some tattoo artists are better at certain things than others. Portraits are a very specific type of tattoo art and I bet the first artist just wasn't good at that. How the first artist could have even felt comfortable with letting the guy leave the shop in the first place is beyond me...

I know, the artist did a really fab coverup job.

Exactly, research and looking over a portfolio is probably the most important thing when it comes to picking an artist. My guess is that the first guy did as good a job as he could. But man, it really sucks.

Yeah the outlining he did was OKAY, but a bit sloppy. Where he really failed was in the shading. I'd say he's not comfortable with portraits or just didn't know how to shade properly. I've gotten a lot of tattoos so I do a lot of observing in the process. It's certainly a different kind of art that needs to be done in a very specific order. While an artist does a tattoo, your skin can get very red/irritated. The tattoo won't look the same when it heals as it does when it is 'fresh'. Only experience can show you what to do.

Like anything you've got to practice, practice, practice. Hopefully that artist has gotten better with tattoo portraiture.
