Since I'm a space nerd and a classical music lover let's have a post comparing Holst's Jupiter and Saturn to the actual radio waves emitted by Jupiter and Saturn.

Holst's The Planets Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity

Actual radio waves emitted by the planet Jupiter

Holst's The Planets Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age

Actual radio waves emitted by the planet Saturn

CREEPY!

When I heard it I just had to share. It's like some weird sort of sci-fi sound effect.

Weird how art imitates the real world without realizing it sometimes, isn't it?

Definitely a bit of a parallel between them!
(which is actually strangely amazing)

Oh! That is so cool! I just played it to my mum (also a classical music lover and closet nerd apparently) and she's amazed too.

It's such a crazy concept to think that despite the silence of space, things are shockingly loud (and very weird sounding at that).

You are an AMAZING person. You have inroduced me to something that I never knew existed before: the sounds of the planets. THESE ARE AMAZING. And the odd thing is, they sound exactly like themselves, to me. Did you go on YouTube and listen to Neptune? I'm simply and completely blown away. THANK YOU for sharing these!!!

You know what's terrible?
I have never really sought out the sound clips until last night when I revisited a high school astronomy powerpoint on the moon and was giving a mock presentation to my sister. Somehow we got onto pulsars - which are dieing stars spinning incredibly fast and spewing out radiation. I told her the radio waves can be changed into sound (I learned that from a universe show. Apparently there are musicians who create songs from the sound. I think the genre is 'space music'?) and I pulled up one of the sound clips on youtube. Pulsars sound like the heartbeat of space. It's eerie and awesome at the same time.
Of course that's when I stumbled onto the planets which are much more fun to compare with the more romantic sounds created by composers.
Anyway, I'm glad you liked my nerd post!

Holst's Jupiter makes me happy whenever I listen to it. And yay for viola parts! :D Though I love the french horns at the beginning.

Saturn is just really creepy. But they all reminded me of Star Trek!

I definitely like Jupiter's composition better, though.

You know, I listened to the entirety of Jupiter... and when I got to a certain part, I just RECOGNIZED it. I couldn't figure out why. So, I pulled up iTunes and searched for "Jupiter." It turns out that it was one of the songs the all-county orchestra did when I was in Middle School. I wasn't even in the orchestra, though... I was in the chorus... so it's bizarre that I even remembered that. And I definitely will listen to the other planets. Since starting my new job (more or less writing/illustrating educational comic books... right now, the series is on science), I have become... obsessed with Astronomy. ;D

You might have also heard the medley as a British hymn. Holst adapted it to include lyrics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEUxgazdA-g

Holst never wrote a Pluto, so if you find any of those it's written in the style of Holst.

I love astronomy and some of the physics that go into the universe!
